The three hanging cocoon forms proposed for the Digorgio Center are inspired by the cycle of life. An intentional connection between nature and woman is explored through the exterior and interior form along with the interior materials. The organic line structure of the cocoon is inspired by the female silhouette. Their relation to the open architecture of the building and the linear shapes work as a pair with the inviting natural lighting and the extreme height of the windows. It is my intention to celebrate the natural beauty of the female form. Each individual interior surface is lined with various materials, specifically copper, glass and fibers to create a symbolic relationship between the interior and exterior. These natural forms create interest against the rigid geometry of the architecture creating an engaging contrast. For me these forms embody seeds that are prepared for growth and expansion, similar to Winthrop students who individually evolve and succeed academically in order to create a future independent from their mothers.

The light bulb is a common representation of thought or device. The process of crafting an idea, although it may appear simple from a macroscopic perspective, is one of physical purpose and extreme complexity.



Perhaps the most striking distinction of the brain is its innate ability to recognize patterns from the most profound to the most trivial. With this piece, I sought to explore the entirety of the gallery space and create something resembling the antithesis of the human mind.
